I recently came across a YouTube video of a massive European-style plane titled “World record – largest plane in the world” which made me curious to learn more.
According to Guinness World Records, it was made by Schreinerei Fust who appear to be a Swiss carpentry business and it measured 7.13 x 4.37 x 2.10 m. They set the world record for the largest functioning plane on 06 May 2017.
The fact they were able to make such a large plane functional enough to take shavings is impressive, even if it did require 8 people to move.
FM1Today has a few images of its construction and use. According to FM1Today, it was an apprentice project created as part of the 20th anniversary of the company and for national pride. “We want to bring the 14-year record of Austria back to Switzerland,”.
There was a previous Austrian record holder? I started digging to find out about that one.
The previous record holder
According to World Records, the Austrian record-setting plane measured 6.5 x 3.5 x 2 m (21.3 x11.4 x 6.5 ft) and weighed 2.5 tonnes. The Austrian plane was made by Johannes Fellner and set the record on 24 May 2003 in Vienna, Austria, requiring 16 men to move it. 1133.at has a few photos of the record ceremony.
